The wall-clock.

At this beginning of 2021, in a large majority we already know and assume the advantages and disadvantages of combining space and time among all the inhabitants of the same home. In an act of distraction, we have reviewed and relocated furniture, and various elements, which beyond the function of decorating, many have become practical elements. This is what has happened to the wall clock, which, beyond decorating, allows us to visualize at all points of a room this great intangible that orders and governs us, time.

And as we look at a wall clock, the beginning of each year is the best time to look closely from all angles, with a strategic vision, what the technological trend will be.

According to the dictionary of the Spanish language the word trend comes from tending ‘propender’, that is, the propensity or inclination in people and in things towards certain purposes, the force by which one body leans towards another or something, the religious, economic, political, artistic, etc. idea, which is oriented in a certain direction. Leaning towards certain purposes and orienting ourselves in a certain direction will allow us to continue to evolve towards our purpose, mission, with greater or lesser complexity.

If the word trend is joined by the word technology, we must be aware that the cycles of evolution are short, between 6 months to a year, that cause considerable changes in a path in continuous construction of maturity. The evolution cycles and maturity of the software depend on the human team that models and respects it at its end. Being the vanguard in technology can be interpreted as having a wall clock very present, robust, rigorous and with a mechanism equipped with alerts or loudness to follow its trend.

Remote work and software maturity.

In the current context we tend socially, in a global way, to adopt the change in the use of space, where the separation between the physical space of work and leisure has been diluted, and the percentages of people who go to work or study, at least partially, from home are raised. We already clearly sense that this trend will continue even when the pandemic is over.

This social trend accelerates the exponential trend in residential and professional use of software in its multiple variants. And with this, the evolution of self-learning software algorithms and intelligent machines that drive the development of software, which, assisted by AI, allows to automate its improvement in resilience and robustness, and, therefore, in its “self-maturation”. This continuous improvement in quality and safety is intended to clearly help to constantly reduce the complexity that is generated when we must manage personal, family, and professional times in the same space, and sometimes time.

The word “maturity” is made up of Latin roots and means the quality of the one who has achieved the expected development. Its lexical components are “maturus” (in season or in its proper time) and the suffix “-ez”. The maturity of the software, as in the case of the human being, depends not on its age but on its ability to gain experience, as well as the focus and responsibility of those who develop them with purpose.

Our look at the software has changed, it is no longer a look towards a specific physical and unique object that has already matured to use it always for the same thing, as in the case of decoration objects, but we can already see it in its evolution and place it, as we have done with the decoration elements of our house, in our best environments where it offers us the necessary practicality.

Ethics and digital architecture

The recognition of this contribution of practicality, and simplification to our lives globally, and its rapid and exponential development, on the other hand, are an engine of reflection, and guide us this year, to a work of greater scope and depth in the field of privacy and data protection, the origin of the sources of information and the understanding of the impact of (tele-) communication both for its mechanisms and for the veracity of the messages.

We will tend to know and communicate more clearly about ethics in the AI’s development and use environment, to ensure, for example, as with data analysis techniques, with recurrent neural networks for highly trusted forecasts will allow us to find hidden patterns and concrete forecasts for more accurate and more responsible business decision-making.

This need for reliability, accountability and awareness gives relevance to the increasingly real trend on blockchain convergence with AI development. The values promoted from decentralized applications, such as trust, democratization, collaboration, and transparency, already tend to unite in “Global Edge-based AI” developments that would bring agility, scalability, and automation.

In closing and opening our eyes this year, our wall-clock will show us that we will more easily aim to prioritize an adaptive use of the software in our lives. With the development of an intelligent software architecture that will connect us in a decentralized way, we will give more transcendence to the information or knowledge transmitted. Moreover, the software development in AI will bring greater value to the layer of human interaction through voice, touch, and hearing, beyond sight, where the glasses that we use to be able to see holograms will no longer be as relevant, but the use of space and this modeling in the software to project what is needed.

We are going to see more accessible software regardless of how many of the five senses we can use. This software will increasingly break down the barriers of time and space, allowing us to manage more easily the physical-emotional-social-economic impact of distances and time differences, to prioritize health and well-being, also encompassing the health of the planet as our main global purpose in the following years.
